People And My Life

In general, the good old days seem to be the days of ones youth, up to one's young adult life when there were few cares and not much accountability in one's life. For the generation today, that desires to see the good old days, they were the years of the sixties and seventies.

There were many good things about that era and foremost was the pure innocence of the times, plus the tranquility and harmony of the people. Innocence had not yet been thrown out the door and the baby was still washing in the bathtub.

There was much poverty in those innocent and tranquil times of the sixties and seventies, but not too much concentration was placed on materialism as is today. People seemed to care more about each other than simply amassing wealth, often while treading down those underfoot.

The atmosphere was more conducive to human occupation as man was more in harmony with his environment. "Greenness" was more prevalent, in the good old days.

I clearly remember the good old days. Those days when there was hardly ever enough to eat. When breakfast for the masses was purely starch, while lunch was just the same, if not worse. They were days when if not for the abundance of fruits, many would possibly have starved to death. We were more in harmony with nature in those good old days. Yes, nature kept us alive.

To get to school, many had to walk barefooted in short khaki pants, very often the only pair for the week. I pity those teachers in the good old days, especially when on a Thursday, fifty or more students in mostly stale uniforms, sit sweating before them in stifling classrooms without even fans. Those were the good old days. The days of innocence and near starvation for many. The days of scarcity at a time when goods were very cheap; sugar being five cents a pound.

I loved those good old days? But what did I know? Whom did I have to feed? Whom to clothe or to educate?

The good old days are gone and good riddance to them. They were days of hardship and needs; basic human needs. Though times are still hard and everything is expensive, it is much easier to survive, today, than in the good old days. More people are being educated and there seems to be a better standard of living than in the good old days.

So when you ask for those "happy-go-lucky" days of innocence and tranquility, remember that sometimes you get what you ask for.
